![]() Reduce can resize images as well as decrease their quality to make them more suitable for mobile uploads/sharing. Opening and closing albums, enlarging previews, opening menus – the animations aren’t terribly slow, but there’s something off about them. The album animation immediately shows one area where I believe Reduce could be better: animations feel a bit slow. 2 Reduce starts with a page showing available iOS albums as stacks of photos tap on one, and the stack expands to reveal the photos inside it, displayed in a grid with the newest ones on top (a nice touch). It doesn’t have any sharing option and the only location where it can save new images is the Camera Roll. Reduce is close to excellence when it comes to the first one.ĭeveloped by Tobias Wiedenmann, Reduce is a $1.99 Universal app to batch resize images with presets. My “ideal” batch resizing photo app for iOS would excel in two different aspects: it would be Universal and have an elegant interface to pick multiple photos at once to batch resize them with presets it would come with a plethora of sharing options built-in, including Cloud Files and SFTP support. 1 The latest Pythonista update made things dramatically better with the Photos module, but I still can’t pick multiple photos at once (and, obviously, I still have to deal with Python). My iOS screenshot workflow is faster thanks to Pythonista and the Hazel script running on the Mac mini, but I miss the possibility of having a single app capable of batch resizing and uploading images to Rackspace Cloud Files. This is what I’ve been using in combination with some Pythonista scripts that would resize screenshots for me. When we decided to move 4 years of image uploads off the FTP and onto a CDN (alongside new uploads on a daily basis), I asked our Don Southard to create a Hazel script that would monitor Dropbox for screenshots and upload them to the CDN. In spite of that, however, I kept using OneEdit to resize multiple screenshots at once, save them to the Camera Roll, fire up Diet Coda, and move them to our FTP server. The downside is that the app’s interface is clunky and convoluted, with seemingly no intention from the developer to update it. ![]() For screenshots, the story is a bit more complicated.įor months, I used OneEdit, an iPhone/iPad app to batch resize images from the Camera Roll OneEdit comes with a lot of features, including presets, Dropbox sharing, and FTP uploads. ![]() Previous hits like Kickboxer had essentially served as showcases for the Muscles from Brussels’ fighting abilities alone but this was different. That was the day Timecop hit cinemas and the moment JCVD’s career changed forever. If Jean-Claude Van Damme were to ever get his hands on a time machine, he might well be tempted to travel back to September 16, 1994. But if you want some Jean-Claude Van Damme action then it will most definitely satisfy.Celebrating Van Damme’s Sci-Fi Classic Timecop (1994) What this all boils down to is that if you watch "Timecop" because it is a time travel movie then prepare to be disappointed. Ironically whilst "Timecop" is all about Van Damme you end up remembering it more for Ron Silver as conniving politician McComb and the beautiful Mia Sara who doesn't have a great deal to do but what she gets she does well and I am not just on about the sex scene. The humour and cheesy dialogue he delivers is done in a tongue in cheek manner, or at least that's how it comes across, and whilst the big hair is distracting he looks the part of a futuristic cop. The cars of the future look like cars now just with a ton of metal blocks plonked randomly on their bodywork and even the futuristic weapons are not that stunning.īut it works because "Timecop" is a movie all about Jean-Claude Van Damme and in many ways it is one of his better performances. Well to be honest it isn't going to excite many with a stunning futuristic vision because it is pretty rudimentary. Of course there is the futuristic aspect of "Timecop" as not only do we have the equipment to send people back to the past but also futuristic cars. Throw in an obligatory scene of Van Damme doing the splits as he balances between kitchen tops and for those who want some Van Damme action will be satisfied. Of course for all the big gun battles and even bigger explosions what really takes centre stage is Jean-Claude Van Damme kicking butt in his own snappy style. That may make it sound a bit cliche but tie that it in with futuristic weapons and the ability to go back to the past and it ends up entertaining. Nope "Timecop" for all its storylines and science fiction is an action movie fuelled by kick butt action, big explosions and mass gun fire. Nor is it really about the story of a politician changing the past to fund his present political campaign or the trauma which TEC cop Max Walker suffered years earlier when his wife was killed. But whilst the trouble of going back to the past is mentioned "Timecop" the movie isn't really about the danger of the ripple effect. And a scene which takes us back to the Wall Street crash is just as much fun, in fact it is even a little clever. And there is some fun had from this, the first scene of time travel sees a solitary cowboy holding up a group of soldiers escorting gold, using a couple of flashy modern machine guns which is surprisingly entertaining. Okay so the basis of "Timecop" is the whole time travel element where we have a police force in charge of making sure people don't go back in time to alter the present. And to be honest whilst there are also moments of tongue in cheek humour, or I hope it is purposeful tongue in cheek humour, "Timecop" is one of Van Damme's more enjoyable movies. As such whilst there is mention of the ripple effect caused by changing the past what we really get is action, be it Van Damme dealing with bad guys with his trademark martial arts skills or some shooting and a few big explosions. But to be honest whilst there is the time travel side of "Timecop" it is not the centre of attention because this is firstly a 90's action movie, a Jean-Claude Van Damme action movie at that. So "Timecop" is a sci-fi movie all about time travel and such mind boggling subjects such as changes in the past affecting the present. But how does Max bring down a highly respected Senator when all those who work for him are scared of what McComb will do to their families. 10 years later and Max has become a respected TEC officer but when he is forced to go back to the past he discovers that Senator McComb ( Ron Silver - Blue Steel) is employing people to travel back in time in order to change the present to fund his political campaigning. ![]() ![]() On the day he is meant to start work as a TEC cop Max Walker ( Jean-Claude Van Damme - Hard Target) is attacked and sees his wife Melissa ( Mia Sara - Ferris Bueller's Day Off) killed. After a scientist unlocks the secrets of time travel the American Government form a special force called TEC to protect the present by protecting the past. ![]() They are mainly provided to assist you in formulating a response.Ĭlass Presentation: Each seminar participant will be required to sign up for at least one class presentation on the week’s readings. These pointers do not have to be followed in any particular order. What is the salient argument that the reading/s are making? Is the argument consistent? If not, are there productive or useful gaps and contradictions for discussion? In the case of a fictional text, what are the key issues that might emerge as the framing ones for the text? Do the readings provide an important intervention in our thinking about feminism as a trans-national project? How can we evaluate the intervention? What assumptions are the readings making in terms of audience/subject matter/discipline, etc.? Is there scope for making useful comparisons with other texts that we are reading? One useful way to do this is to focus on a specific part of a reading. In order to prepare for this aspect of the seminar, you should formulate a question and a point for discussion for each reading. The seminar will then open up for general discussion, questions and responses. Seminar Structure: We will begin each session with a short introductory lecture that will be followed by presentation/s. This means that you must keep on top of the required readings-reading thoroughly, carefully and in a timely manner. Seminar Participation: Seminars generally succeed or fail because of the quality of group participation. If there is a medical reason or any other urgent situation, a written note should be submitted for record. Selections of essays (available on Talis Aspire and/or web page)Īttendance: Attendance at each seminar is mandatory. Rabindranath Tagore, The Home and the World Each unit will have a key literary text around which the different theoretical questions will circulate. The last unit, Gender and the New Empire, will consider the relationship between new forms of global imperialism (the “war on terror” being one instance of it) and the ways in which those have influenced questions of transnational feminist solidarity and activism. In The World, the Body, the Text we will look at cultural and political constructions of the gendered body. In Unveiling the Subject we will examine issues of subjectivity and identity. The rubric of Subalterneity, Solidarity and Experience will consider those three keywords as they pertain to the theory and practice of transnational feminism. We will do this by looking at some themes in Term 2. We will also consider new theorisations of trans-national feminism. The third unit, Migrating Selves/Working Bodies, will explore how gendered identities are constituted in the context of a rapid globalization of capital and culture, with special emphasis on late capitalist commodity culture, development discourse and transformations in labour and migration processes. In the second unit, Woman/Nation, we will examine anti-colonialist and nationalist writings and consider the relationship between gender, state and nation. We will examine writings by Western women travellers, missionaries, and social reformers and by anti-colonialist writers and activists, as they developed and articulated ideologies of women’s emancipation. The first Modernism, Colonialism and Gender will consider the 19th century context of the “woman question” as integral to the colonial project. The syllabus consists of 7 broad themes over the two terms, each consisting of a number of different threads. In particular, the history of Euro-American colonialism, anti-colonial movements, nationalism, decolonization, development and modernization projects post-World War II, crises of global capitalism, and new social and political movements will provide broad contextual frameworks for understanding transnational feminism. ![]() As such, it will examine the tensions, negotiations and new articulations (specifically as transnational feminism) that can be read through the lens of historical developments from the nineteenth century to the present. This module will explore the relationship between Anglo-American and European feminist literary theory and practices with those of feminisms of the global South. If not, then he can be credited as an independent inventor. I don't know if Savery knew of Beaumont's steam engine. So you see, the inventor of steam engines is not Newcomen or Watt, but at the latest, Beaumont. It mentions a lot more stuff too, like a Frenchman who heated small sealed boilers until they exploded, demonstrating that steam pressure can do stuff.) (I got most of this knowledge from the wiki article on History of the Steam Engine. In fact, Newcomen went into partnership with Savery due to the patent. ![]() It was very similar to the one that Newcomen would soon build. Thomas Savery built a steam engine in 1698 called "The Miner's Friend" and got a patent for it. (Hero's aeliopile was a reaction-type turbine.) Wikipedia says that no one knows if the toy was ever actually built, with no citation. You can see from the drawing that a jet of steam hits paddlewheels. This is pretty amazing to me, as it predates Savery and Necommen by about 100 years.so amazing in fact that I might open a question about it.įerdinand Verbiest designed a steam-powered toy car, 65 cm long, for the Chinese Emperor around 1672. Jeronimo Beaumont, a Spaniard, got a patent for a steam-powered water pump that was used to drain mines. Steam cooking involves the steam itself heating and moistening the foodstuff in a different way than in boiling water. Steam cooking is different from just boiling something in water. Pretty sure dried tea leaves were steamed in China to make all sorts of tea. But apparently no one did.Īlso, it is not the first practical use of steam itself. It could have been the beginning if people saw it and tried to improve it, like make it bigger, and apply it to something like a paddlewheel boat. I would call that the first practical use of a steam engine, but not enough for an industrial revolution. So this would be the first impulse-type steam turbine. Apparently the device had vanes on a wheel, and a jet of steam hit the vanes. Taqi al-Din, an Ottoman, described a rotary steam thing that rotated a barbeque spit. Practical steam power predates both Watt and Newcomen.
